Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Hurghada, Egypt: Beaches, Pyramids & Island Trips

    ClarissaBy ClarissaJune 8, 2026

Before setting foot on Egypt’s eastern coastline, my expectations were admittedly hazy. I anticipated sun, sea, and perhaps a distant glimpse of the pyramids. What I didn’t foresee was the sheer abundance of experiences this coastal stretch offers, or how quickly it would capture my heart. Reflecting on my journey, there are several things I wish I had known beforehand. If you’re planning a trip, consider this the insider guide I desperately needed.

Here is an honest breakdown of what surprised me, what I absolutely loved, and the essential advice I’d share with first-time visitors to this remarkable corner of the world.

It’s Far More Than Just a Beach Getaway

My biggest misconception was assuming my itinerary would consist entirely of lounging on the sand. While relaxation is certainly a highlight, I quickly discovered that the region is brimming with activities. Within 24 hours of arrival, I found myself scrolling through an extensive list of Hurghada Excursions, wondering how I could possibly fit them all into one trip.

From scuba diving and snorkeling to desert safaris, quad biking, and boat excursions, the sheer variety caught me completely off guard. What impressed me most was the seamless booking process. The tours I reserved included convenient hotel pickup and all necessary equipment, eliminating any travel stress. My advice? Don’t assume a week on the beach will leave you bored. Leave room in your itinerary for adventure, because you will crave it.

The Water Is Even More Stunning Than the Pictures

I had seen countless glossy images online and assumed they were heavily filtered. Then, I took a boat out to one of the local islands, and my jaw literally dropped. The day I spent at Orange Bay Hurghada remains one of my most cherished memories from the entire trip, and photographs simply cannot do it justice.

The water was so crystal clear and shallow in certain areas that I could see straight to the seabed, with sandbanks resembling something straight out of a postcard. I spent hours snorkeling among vibrant marine life before drying off on the warm sand with a refreshing cold drink. If you take only one piece of advice from me, let it be this: dedicate a full day to an island excursion. It is worth every single minute, and I would gladly return tomorrow.

You Actually Can Visit the Pyramids, Too

This is the experience I almost missed, and I am incredibly glad I didn’t. I had assumed that visiting the pyramids would require a separate, overly complicated expedition. In reality, it was far more accessible than I anticipated. I booked a Cairo tour from Hurghada via minivan, and it evolved into one of the most memorable days of my life.

Standing before the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx was a profoundly emotional experience—the kind that makes millennia of history feel suddenly, vividly real. Traveling in a small group kept the atmosphere relaxed and personal, while our guide brought ancient stories to life in a way I never could have managed alone. We even had time to explore the Egyptian Museum before returning to the coast that evening. If you are staying by the sea, do not talk yourself out of this excursion. It is entirely doable and absolutely worth it.

A Few Practical Lessons Learned the Hard Way

Not everything went flawlessly, and some of my best advice stems from minor mistakes. First, I severely underestimated the sun. Pack more sunscreen than you think you will need, along with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, because the heat is no joke. Second, I delayed my excursion bookings one week and missed out on a highly sought-after tour that had already filled up. During peak seasons, reserve your top choices well in advance to be safe.

I also wish I had packed a waterproof phone case sooner, as I missed capturing some incredible underwater moments early in the trip. Furthermore, while it is tempting to cram in as many activities as possible, I learned that pacing yourself makes the entire vacation much more enjoyable. Build in a few slow mornings and quiet evenings; you will appreciate that downtime more than you expect.

Would I Go Back? Without a Doubt

By the end of my journey, I had swum in some of the clearest waters I had ever seen, raced across desert dunes at sunset, and stood before monuments that have captivated humanity for millennia. It was that rare type of holiday that delivered relaxation and excitement in perfect equal measure, leaving me already planning my return visit.

If you are on the fence about visiting, let this be the nudge you need. This coastline offers a unique blend of beach relaxation, thrilling adventure, and rich history that is genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the world. Go in with an open mind, a flexible schedule, and a bit of the advice shared here, and I am confident you will return home just as smitten as I was.
